There’s no question that discrimination due to gender, race and disability has been prevalent in workplaces in the past. As society has evolved, however, so have the legal and ethical implications of employing or promoting based on anything other than skills and qualifications.

At one point, once a staff member had achieved a stable, well-paid career, they were generally content to stay with the company. The ‘them and us’ of days gone by is no longer appropriate for the modern-day leader. Personality testing is used often to ensure a good cultural fit within existing teams. Greater care and compassion are given to staff with maternity, paternity and carers leave available. Employees offer more flexibility to provide a more personal touch in the workplace rather than simply hiring someone to do their job.

CHANGES IN COMMUNICATION STYLES

The days of face-to-face meeting or picking up the phone every time you wanted to talk to someone are a thing of the past. Today’s leaders are privy to short, sharp emails, text messages, instant messages and even ‘likes’ and reactions on social media. While these interactions save time, they’re no replacement for regular contact and leaders undoubtedly have to work harder to create the connections necessary for long-term trust, loyalty and respect within a team.

HOW ARE TODAY’S LEADERS IMPACTED?

While current shifts in leadership have led to greater efficiencies and more sophisticated product development to meet the market, it’s a conscious effort to raise today’s workforce into leaders of our future. There needs to be a much stronger focus on effective communication and training leadership skills as less loyalty to companies means positions are now often being created for the person rather than arguably the other way round.

It’s clear to see that throughout time, regardless of culture and technology developments, good leaders have and will continue to lead with respect, courage, honesty, transparency and integrity. While those qualities are still prevalent in effective leaders today, the tools at their disposal continually evolve and good leaders must now have the capacity to adapt and to recognise those changes and instil them in the workforce.
