Stage three of the Gold Coast light rail extension between Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads is underway. The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads recently released this concept fly-through for public consultation of the proposed stage 4 extension, connecting Tugun with the Gold Coast Airport and Coolangatta.

I have been a big fan of the light rail from day one. Not only because I live within walking distance of a tram station but also because I believe it is a key piece to the Gold Coast’s public transport solution. I remember how the critics predicted that no one would use it and it would cause more traffic congestions.

Fast forward a few years, passenger numbers have significantly exceeded any prior forecast, and all suburbs along the light rail line have experienced a substantial increase in daily visitor numbers. In particular, those holidaymakers that prefer to stay in one of the cheaper motels or apartments north and south of Surfers Paradise use the light rail to explore the Gold Coast’s major dining precincts.

Another positive side effect of the light rail construction is the associated upgrades to roads, footpaths and landscaping along the corridor, providing a refreshed and modern appearance.

With a heavy rail connection, a bus network, a river ferry service, the light rail, and an airport, the Gold Coast can certainly claim to have one of the best public transport networks in the world. The only missing piece is a fast rail link to Brisbane.
